Nth degrees of separation

'''Nth degrees of separation''' is a project derived from two things. One, another page located on Crazy frog ringtone Department_of_fun/Dept. of Fun. Two, the Six Degrees of Separation experiment.

My idea is to expand on that Wikipedia page some. The details are as follows:

#Generate a random page.
#Generate a second random page.
#State these pages on this main page.
#Follow the links in those pages until you arrive at the second random page.
#Count how many pages you had to go through in order to reach the goal from the start.

It is still up in the air as whether or not to use categories or dates. Personally I object to both simply because of the fun aspect. I have a whole treatise of philosophy of human behavior that can be derived from this simple idea alone. =)

A method to determine the links you could follow is to choose a link at random. This may merit more accurate results.

The first randomly generated page will be called the start and the second randomly generated page will be called the goal.

The purpose of this page is to announce a start and goal for anyone to pick up on. I realize that because Wikipedia is so unfathomably enormous it would take lots and lots of traversing in order to reach the goal. Therefore, when someone is bored they may post the last page that they were on, including a timestamp, and then someone else may dive on in and start swimming.

In my mind at least, the contributions of such a project would be enormous. This could possibly be a tool for collecting useful wikidata. If something could automatically follow these pages while continously submitting feedback of their progress huge amounts of data could be collected, stored, and analyzed by all wikipedians, but maybe I am just a dreamer. =) The contributions of this could also be simple. For example, if you see a stub without a notice then you could add the stub tag. If you see an unwikified word you could simply wikify it.

There is alot of work for me to flesh out, such as, what system should I utilize in order to keep this page from becoming one huge jumbled mess? If anyone would like to contribute then please leave a message on either my talk or user page or simply dive right on in. I hope to see this page and this idea expand rapidly!

Oh yeah, do not hesitate to edit this page in order to make it easier to understand or just make it look cool!

Big Ben (horse) > S Club 8
Let us begin, shall we?

Start: She Needs Pussy Big Ben (horse)
Goal: Cricket ringtones S Club 8

*I can't believe how hard it is to connect a British horse to a British band, maybe I should create some extra incoming links to Trailer Trash Whores S Club 8 to make it easier? No, just joking ;-).
:LG ringtones Big Ben (horse) > Kates Playground England > Samsung ringtone United Kingdom > ???? > Karen Loves Kate S Club 8 seems a good way to start... Punjabi Ringtones MacGyverMagic/Trista Stevens User:MacGyverMagic/Mgm/Cingular Ringtones User talk:MacGyverMagic/(talk) 22:59, Dec 16, 2004

'''Alternate Solution'''
How about this: Big Ben (horse) > England > Europe > List of Europe-related topics > Europop > Spice Girls > Simon Fuller > S Club 8 ?

And I didn't edit any pages to make it possible, I promise.

Foundry > Sigurd I or Norway
Now anyone may generate two pages and post them here to be followed! Jaberwocky6669/Jaberwocky6669 20:19, Feb 3, 2005

Here ya go: Start: Foundry Goal: Sigurd I of Norway - Go go Wikipede! Cctoide/Cctoide 12:35, 8 Feb 2005

*Since I'm from Norway myself I just had to try this one, and actually it was not to hard:

Foundry -> Metal -> Silver (actually I tried to go via Aluminium since Norway produces it but it isn't mentioned in the article :( ) -> Anglo-Saxon (here I had a number of possibilites, but I choosed: ) -> Germanic -> Germanic_peoples -> Norway -> List_of_Norwegian_monarchs -> Sigurd_I_of_Norway. Goal! : ) 82.164.33.130/82.164.33.130 23:06, 8 Feb 2005

(I don't have a userpage here, but at the http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruker:Haavis Norwegian Wiki)

Awesome! Jaberwocky6669/Jaberwocky6669 04:28, Feb 9, 2005

Jean-Louis Trintignant > The Screwdriver

Start: Jean-Louis Trintignant Goal: The Screwdrivers

This one may not be as easy... ;)

Jean-Louis Trintignant> Formula One> Ferrari> Fuel injection> Engine displacement> Volume> Sound> ???? Jaberwocky6669/Jaberwocky6669 04:28, Feb 9, 2005

*Just had to try again : ) Seems like I had to go trough the categories to get to this one:

''Picking up at Sound'':

Sound -> Music -> Rock_and_Roll -> :Tag: Rock_music -> :Tag: Rock_music_groups -> The_Screwdrivers. Goal!

Felt a bit like cheating using the Categories, but it seems that is the only way since it is no other pages linking directly to The Screwdrivers ,)

FedEx Corporation > Hyundai Motor Company

Foiled once again! Try this one on for size!...
Start: FedEx Corporation Goal: Hyundai Motor Company Well, this one may be rather easy being well-known companies.

FedEx Corporation -> Automobile -> General Motors -> Automobile_maker -> List_of_automobile_manufacturers -> Hyundai Motor Company Weeee! ,) http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruker:Haavis Haavis

A not-so-obvious-path, but with just four jumps(!), could be:

FedEx Corporation -> Automobile -> August_17 -> August_6 -> Hyundai_Motor_Company http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruker:Haavis Haavis

:You're good at this! Jaberwocky6669/Jaberwocky6669 00:26, Feb 10, 2005

Centennial Grounds > McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway

Start: Centennial Grounds Goal: McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway

Shouldn't be too easy ;) Cctoide/Cctoide 14:07, 10 Feb 2005

Ouch! Who is the insensitive clod that did not link McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway from Cascade Range? :-P Anyway, here's a partial solution:

Centennial Grounds -> Philadelphia, PA (redirect to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) -> Pensylvania -> Oregon -> Cascade Range

Or you could also do:

Centennial Grounds -> 1875 -> May 17 -> May 18 -> Mount_St._Helens -> Cascade Range

The block is that Cascade Range mentions McKenzie and Santiam passes by name but does not link to them!
